Freshwater Ecology

What we do

Bioresearches’ clients benefit from our extensive knowledge of New Zealand freshwater systems and of how to manage these within acceptable statutory limits.

Our freshwater team evaluates the health of waterways by assessing stream-water quality, habitats and fish, macroinvertebrate and aquatic-plant communities.

With this information, we are able to determine the likely impacts of proposed projects on streams and other freshwater aquatic ecosystems and recommend actions required to meet resource consent criteria.

On your behalf, we are able to relocate native fish, design fish passages and restore or create freshwater habitats.

We also have significant experience undertaking Stream Ecological Valuations (SEV) – a method of calculating the relative ecological value of streams under council statutory specifications. SEV is used to provide baseline information, to determine the extent of potential stream impacts and to calculate ecological compensation (ECR) for mitigation and off-set compensation purposes.
